Heavy Duty Mechanic - Spare Bus Driver

The Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools are seeking a dedicated and skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic / Spare Bus Driver to join our school district’s transportation team! This dual-role position plays a vital part in ensuring the safety and reliability of our fleet while supporting student transportation as needed.

As a Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of school buses and other district vehicles to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Your expertise will help keep our transportation system running smoothly and on schedule.

In your role as a Spare Bus Driver, you will step in to safely transport students on designated routes when regular drivers are unavailable. This requires a commitment to student safety, punctuality, and strong communication skills.

Job Summary

Assignment: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 7:30AM - 4:00PM, Location: District Transportation Department. Starting as soon as practicable, with the opening available effective July 20, 2026. 

Wage: $38.78 per/hr. with a competitive benefits and pension package, based on a 40-hour work week.  

Your Qualifications, Education and Experience include:

  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Successful completion of the B.C. Apprenticeship Program and a valid B.C. Trade Certification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Mechanic
  • Minimum of one-year related experience at the journeyman level
  • Physical capability to perform the job duties
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Valid B.C. Class 2 Driver’s License with an Air Brake Endorsement
  • Valid WCB Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate
  • Current Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate with class/endorsements 12345 A
