Manager of Health and Safety Job Description

The Universal Group is seeking a dynamic individual for the role of Manager of Health and Safety to provide reliable, timely and professional support for our BC based operation from our Burnaby office (unit 170, 8061 Lougheed Hwy).  The manager of Health and Safety reports to the President and works closely with the management teams from our multiple companies with regards to WorkSafeBC programs, Health and Safety procedures and programs, Cerfifate of Recognition (COR) requirements and maintenance, and provide expert knowledge and skills in order to generate and promote a positive health and safety culture.

  • Ensure the safe operation of the multiple companies under our umbrella and be at service to its management teams
  • Assist in the development and implementation of company Health and Safety policies, procedures and programs to enhance safety culture
  • Provide leadership, guidance and technical support to operations regarding specific issues relative to H&S programs and policies
  • work in conjunction with Human Resouces to develope and lead in-house H&S training with managers and employees which include employee coaching and discipline
  • Work in conjunction with Human Resources on Respectful Workplace Programs and Instructions
  • Assess risks and trends in the workplace and implement corrective measures to reduce risk across all companies and divisions
  • Monitor compliance, report and assess safety key performance indicators and implement programs to effevtively reduce risk, increase safety awareness, and manage costs to meet corporate objectives
  • Monitor all WorkSafeBC claims and effectively file all claims to reduce cost to the multiple companies
  • Identify, investigate, report and provide guidance relative to root causes for incidents, employee safety programs, regulatory compliance relative to Health and Safety for our various companies
  • Assess and oversee the management of WorkSafe BC cases through modified work programs
  • Guide Health and Safety Officer in conducting investigations of work injuries and determine compliance with legislated standards and regulations
  • Oversee the maintaining of records of incidents and accidents and provide statistics for management
  • Participate in and maintain our Certificate of Recognition (COR) status for the multiple companies
  • Assist with JHSC meetings with worker and employer representatives, initiate follow up and corrective action to ensure compliance and maintain effective communication with workers and employers
  • Ensure the safe operation of equipment and adherence to maintenance schedules
  • Develope and implement solutions for emergency preparedness plans for the company
  • Assist and effectively guide the management teams from our various companies with the coordination of special project needs
  • Must be proficient in the English language to assist in the writing of project bidding forms and applicatios
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team with our multiple companies

position Requirements

  •  Minimum 7-10 years Health & Safety experience in the Construction Industry
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with WorkSafeBC Claims Management
  • Excellent working knowlege of OHSA, other Acts and related Federal, Provincial and local regulations, standards, legistation that govern Health and Safety compliance
  • Qualified COR Internal Auditor
  • Ability to manage a team of Safety Specialists
  • Ability to time manage, prioritize and user sound judgement
  • knowledge and experience in training in a group environment
  • Strong ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent leadership, change management and team building skills
  • Excellent English commumication skills, both oral and written
  • Exceptional problem solving and decision making skills
  • Qualified Traffic Control Person as per the WorkSafeBC regulation for traffic control and holds a current/valid BCCSA certificate
  • Good knowledge of the requirements of the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations related to Traffic Control
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Applicable work experience may be observed in lieu of above required qualifications listed
