Group Controller

Accounting & Finance leadership role with a complex multi-entity company with both a long history and a bright future. Ongoing growth plans, which will translate to long-term room for growth for the Group Controller. Leading a team of 6 direct reports, including divisional controllers, as well as 4+ indirect reports. 

Who- the Company:

Our client is a multi-national and privately-held company headquartered in Greater Vancouver with over 1000 employees. The company has 2 main divisions and over 15 entities, plus joint ventures. Several of the company’s operations most local candidates will likely to have heard of. It’s a very complex, well-established, and successful company. 

What- the Role:

Due to the company’s ongoing growth, the Company is seeking a new Group Controller. The Controller will have 2 Divisional Controllers as direct reports, as well as 4 other direct reports and 4+ indirect reports. 
The portfolio of responsibilities is varied and includes period-end close, team mentorship and coaching, oversight and analysis of financial statement preparation, accounting process improvements, budget preparation, financial system optimization, etc. SWIM will provide interested candidates with a detailed job description! 

Who- the Candidate:

  • Canadian CPA designation (or International equivalent). 
  • Relevant hands-on experience with financial reporting and consolidations for a complex, multi-entity organization.
  • We are seeking a proven people leader who has managed a team of at least 5 direct reports, preferably also with experience with a few indirect reports (i.e. having a middle-manager layer)
  • Experience working for a company that is growing (organically and through M&A) is highly preferred. 
  • Public practice training is preferred, but not required. 
  • Strong experience with financial systems is needed for this role, including system optimization and process improvements. It is an asset if a candidate has directly participated in a major financial system implementation or upgrade project. 
  • Experience in an operations-heavy and industrially oriented company is an asset, but not at all required for a quick and eager learner. 


Headquartered in Greater Vancouver. Good commute for someone living in North Vancouver, East Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, etc. Around a 20-minute drive from downtown Vancouver, depending on traffic.

How Much: 

Base salary commensurate with work experience and relevant education/qualifications- please discuss with SWIM. In addition to the base salary, there is also a bonus (partly based on company profitability, partly based on individual performance), 4 weeks vacation, PD support, and a robust defined contribution pension plan.
Additional Notes: 
  • The Company is in the process of rolling out a Covid-19 vaccination policy. 
  • The President and many other leaders work in the office 5 days a week. Given this is a people leadership role, the preference is to have the Group Controller in office 4 to 5 days a week. 
  • The Company is implementing a new ERP, including accounting & finance modules, in the coming year.
