The General Supervisor is responsible for managing teams of multi-discipline trades workers, determining staffing requirements and overseeing work assignments within an designated area. The General Supervisor is responsible for ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with shipyard safety, quality, and environment standards, policies and procedures. To ensure standards are met, the General Supervisor will maintain optimal operational performance by conducting performance management tasks, including but not limited to: approving trade employee time cards and leave requests, applying disciplinary measures as required, and ensuring the collective agreement is applied appropriately. The position reports directly to an Area Manager or SOC Manager and requires significant interaction with Trade Managers.
  • Ensures work is performed and delivered in accordance with safety, cost, and quality schedules.
  • Implements and enforces Seaspan's Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality processes on the shop floor and strives to eliminate safety hazards at every opportunity.
  • Reports internally on work process and status.
  • Escalates technical trade issues with management and implements determined solutions.
  • Responsible for interpreting work order specifications and ensuring work orders are completed on time.
  • Remains informed on revisions to standards, production planning, and material availability.
  • Assists in determining work plans, sequences, and schedules; may be required to assist in preparing estimates.
  • Responsible for delivering production in accordance with Company and customer quality standards.
  • Partners with management to ensure trade employees have the skills, equipment, training, and certifications required to perform planned work activities.
  • Ensures work crews minimize waste and unnecessary delays in construction or repair work.
  • Works with management to eliminate inefficient work practices and maximize the skills and experience of their crew.
  • Allocates trades employees in accordance with production schedule and priorities, assigning work to employees with the skill and ability to efficiently complete scheduled work.
  • Responsible for performance and attendance management, including discipline, termination of employment, and assigning or removing Chargehand responsibilities to trades employees.
  • Upholds and enforces the collective agreement and management best practices.
  • Responsible for timekeeping administration and approval of direct and indirect reports.
  • Ensures all employees are provided a respectful and harassment free work environment.
  • Works with Wellness and Abilities Management as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Post-secondary degree or trades certification is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in one of the following trade disciplines: Welding, Burning Table, Painting or Shipfitting; or advanced education in a related field with a minimum of 2 years related trades work experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience required.
  • Well-rounded knowledge of heavy manufacturing trade responsibilities (welding, burning table, shipfitting, paint/sandblasting etc.).

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite and web based applications.
