Food Service Worker, Patient Food Services, C&W

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Food Service Worker performs various duties that include food preparation, cooking and assembly, and/or checking order accuracy for patients. The role follows established food recipes and production standards to ensure proper quality, serving temperatures and standard portion control, escalating to Cook, Supervisor, and/or Manager accordingly.

What you'll do
  • Prepares patient meal items such as tea, coffee, toast, salads, sandwiches, milkshakes, infant formulas and tube feedings by weighing, measuring and combining ingredients.
  • Assembles patient meal trays according to menu. Portions food for patients and/or retail food areas according to specified requirements.
  • Loads, delivers, collects, and unloads meal service wagons.
  • Cleans soiled dishes and utensils; stores cleaned dishes, trays and utensils in the appropriate areas.
  • Prepares items such as vegetables and fruit by procedures such as washing, slicing, dicing and grating.
  • Delivers food items from storage areas to work areas; rotates stock; removes food items from packaging, cans and/or freezer; labels, packages and transfers food items to freezer storage.
  • Performs cleaning duties such as sweeping and damp mopping floors, cleaning counter tops, sinks, machines and equipment and spot washing walls and splash areas; removes garbage as required.
  • Carry pans, kettles, and trays of food to and from workstations, stove and refrigerator in accordance with safety standards
  • Store food in designated areas following wrapping, dating, food safety and rotation procedures.
  • Notifies leadership of retail product inventory when low.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

What you bring

Qualifications
  • Grade 10 plus one year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Certificate in Food Safe Level 1.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.

  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
