Job Description

Finance Manager

Port Alberni, BC | Permanent | Full-time or flexible 3 to 4 day schedule considered
Compensation: Up to approximately $120,000 full-time equivalent, depending on experience and schedule

Burke Recruiting is pleased to be partnering with a Not For Profit leader in Port Alberni in the search for an experienced Finance Manager.

This is a unique opportunity for a strong finance professional who wants to do meaningful work in a community-focused organization, without necessarily committing to a traditional five-day workweek.

They have been supporting the community for decades through a broad range of programs and services. With multiple funding streams, diverse programs and continued organizational growth, the Centre is looking for a Finance Manager who can bring strong financial leadership, structure and stability to the organization.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director and oversee a small finance team. This role would be particularly appealing to an experienced Finance Manager, Controller or CPA who enjoys being hands-on, values work-life balance and wants to use their expertise in an organization where the work truly matters.

What you'll be responsible for
  • Providing overall financial leadership and oversight for the organization
  • Managing budgeting, forecasting, cash flow and financial reporting
  • Overseeing multiple program budgets and funding agreements
  • Managing month-end and year-end processes
  • Working closely with external auditors and ensuring a smooth annual audit process
  • Maintaining strong financial controls, reconciliations and approval processes
  • Supporting reporting requirements for government and other funding organizations
  • Providing meaningful financial information to the Executive Director, Board and program leaders
  • Supervising, mentoring and supporting members of the finance team
  • Helping strengthen processes and systems as the organization continues its transition to QuickBooks
  • Working collaboratively with staff across the organization while remaining actively engaged in the broader community
The person we're looking for

You don't necessarily need to come from one exact background.

A CPA designation would be an asset, but strong practical finance experience is equally important. Candidates who have successfully managed finance within a nonprofit, charitable, social-services, healthcare, Indigenous or other multi-funded environment will be particularly relevant.

Just as important is how you work. We are looking for someone who is organized, meticulous and dependable, but also approachable and communicative. You should be comfortable working independently while keeping the Executive Director informed, welcoming appropriate oversight and being willing to speak up when something doesn't look right.

This is not the environment for someone who wants to work in a silo. The right person will enjoy being part of the organization, connecting with colleagues and understanding the programs and community behind the numbers.

Why this opportunity is different

One of the most attractive aspects of this role is the flexibility.

While a full-time schedule can be considered, the Centre is very open to an experienced professional working approximately three to four days per week, depending on the individual and what makes sense for the role.

That could make this an excellent fit for someone who has significant finance experience but no longer wants a conventional five-day senior finance position.

The organization currently offers:

Three weeks' vacation from the outset, health benefits, matching RRSP contributions, seven-hour workdays and a supportive, community-oriented environment. The Centre is also exploring the introduction of a pension plan.

This is primarily an in-person position in Port Alberni, as collaboration and connection with the organization are important. Some flexibility may be possible depending on the individual and arrangement.

About you

You're likely someone who has already developed solid finance judgment and doesn't need a lot of hand-holding. You understand that good finance leadership is about more than producing reports. It's about asking questions, protecting the organization, supporting decision-makers and making sure the financial side of the organization is running properly.

Experience with nonprofit or fund accounting, government funding, grants and multiple program budgets would be highly valuable.

Above all, the client is looking for someone who wants to stay, contribute and become a trusted part of the organization.

Interested?

If this sounds like the kind of role you've been looking for, I'd love to have a confidential conversation.
