This position is 32 hours a week, with facilitation occurring in the early evening twice a week. Facilitation takes place primarily in person, while employment coaching can be delivered in a hybrid format depending on the needs of the students.

The Role
The Facilitator and Youth Employment Specialist will:

    •Assist and provide Skills for Life support through small group facilitation or one to one coaching to newcomer youth in the Education Reboot component of the Burnaby Youth Wraparound Project;
    •Provide hope-centred career development training;
    •Provide orientation to College services and the post-secondary environment;
    •Assist participants in developing settlement action plans;
    •Connect participants to employers, employment opportunities, networks and community resources; and
    •Assist participants with resume and portfolio preparation.

Responsibilities

Facilitation:

    •Provide instruction and activities to increase Skills for Life, determine potential career and educational paths, and orient participants to the post-secondary environment;
    •Evaluate learners at regular intervals and provide feedback;
    •Encourage peer mentorship and learning in small group sessions;
    •Support learners to overcome perceived barriers;
    •Provide information, support and program guidance to Training Group staff, project partners and stakeholders involved in the program.


Employment Specialist Activities:

    •Recruit employers to participate in the project;
    •Arrange informational interviews between participants and employers;
    •Match participants with appropriate employment opportunities;
    •Prepare participants for job interviews;
    •Prepare participants for Canadian workplace culture; and
    •Assist with participant resume and portfolio development.
Curriculum Development:

    •Scaffold learning, applying skills for life methodology;
    •Integrate authentic workplace materials;
    •Create self-directed learning modules;
    •Follow the principles of hope-centred career development;
    •Integrate curriculum materials and resources provided by project partners;
    •Adapt available curriculum to the needs of the current cohort.


Assessment:

    •Invigilate and help participants interpret skills assessments; and
    •Invigilate and help participants interpret personality assessments.


Administration:

    •Maintain participant progress records adhering to privacy requirements;
    •Maintain organized electronic file system of curriculum with instruction guides;
    •Communicate effectively and work with all project partners and stakeholders as required;
    •Participate in team meetings;
    •Complete reports and paperwork as required;
    •Contribute to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System; and
    •Assist with marketing and delivery of presentations to potential participants, school districts, employers, boards of trade, and chambers of commerce.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

    •A Bachelor's Degree (preferably in Education or Psychology) or equivalent experience;
    •Experience in employment programs;
    • CDP certificate an asset;
    •Knowledge of career exploration platforms in British Columbia;
    •Knowledge of the BC post-secondary system, particularly of Douglas College;
    •Familiarity with Skills for Life resources and tools;
    •Experience with group facilitation and individual coaching;
    •Experience working with newcomer youth; and
    •Experience with digital learning management systems, such as Blackboard and Moodle.
