Position:        Electrical Engineer/ Instrumentation Engineer

Location:        Burnaby, BC, Canada

General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

Position Overview:

We are looking for an Electrical/Instrumentation Engineer to join our Diagnostics team. In support of the Fusion Demonstration Plant development program, the work will focus on development of signal capture & processing equipment for diagnostics equipment. The ideal candidate has a strong background in designing and implementing solutions for capturing, processing, and digitizing high-speed analog signals in the presence of various complex noise sources. This is a hands-on position that requires experience with real-world applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implementation of signal capture & processing equipment for diagnostics
  • Design and implementation of software algorithms for processing digital data
  • DAQ equipment design & implementation
  • Working with spice modelling / circuit transfer design

Relevant Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, with 5-10 years relevant experience
  • Experience developing hardware and software for analog signal processing
  • Experience developing high speed & bandwidth Analog-Digital Conversion (DAQ) equipment
  • Experience designing for high electrical noise environments
  • EMI/EMC experience
  • Strong knowledge of sensor and transducer design
  • Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment
  • Experience designing high speed (GHz) amplifiers
  • Experience with design and implementation of high-speed timing electronics

  • Developing electronics for pulsed power or switched power environments
  • Experience in designing & validating prototypes in a research and development setting
  • Experience or background in plasma physics
  • Experience with Python or equivalent software language
  • Experience integrating data processing or DAQ equipment with control systems (LabVIEW, Industrial PLC, or other)

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the plasma development and understand how their work relates to the whole. This is a broader support role to the diagnostics team. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.
