We are currently looking for a Drawing Office Manager, for our company that is located in Delta BC. Our company is a firm specializing in design-build services to a growing clientele in the commercial, institutional and residential building sector. Our niche is creating, fabricating, and erecting practical design solutions for unique architectural concepts, usually in long span, exposed timber and timber/steel structures. We are an exciting, growing company that thrives on challenge and innovation. We work extensively across North America and have recently completed a project in China (Tsingtao Pearl Visitor’s Centre).


The Drawing Office:


Because of their complexity, the majority of our projects are modeled in 3D parametric design software. This allows us to refine both the aesthetics and the geometry of framing and connections as the design is resolved. The Drawing Office Manager plays a key role in our organization as the hub of design information from the architect and our own engineering group, to the translating of that information into approval drawings and shop drawings.


As we are design-builders, there is significant interface between the detailing department, the project management team, the design office and structural engineers, the shop floor where building components are fabricated, and our site erectors. The output of the drafting/detailing/modelling office is critical to creating efficiency downstream, and 3D models and drawings must be planned and arranged in close consideration with erection and fabrication constraints. You will be in charge of managing this process.


Our detailing department creates and defines complex 3D geometry, and delivers solids models and drawings used for fabrication, as well as conceptual models and renders for potential projects. We currently use Inventor for solids modelling/detailing (/ Tekla), Rhino/Grasshopper for conceptualising complex geometry, and 3DS Max (/ outsourcing) for rendering.


The Position:


We are looking for a proactive and versatile team member with strong leadership skills and a genuine interest in the many facets of our business. Your responsibilities will include oversight of three to five project draftsmen, the ongoing planning and execution of departmental budgets and schedule, the establishment and implementation of drawing standards, document control, drawing checking, and others. You will additionally be capable of handling your own drafting, 3D modeling and rendering work, as time permits.


Your role will also involve a fair amount of aesthetically-driven design, under guidance from our design team (i.e. not just ‘scribing’ from a set of fully prepared drawings) and requires an eye for what 'looks good', ranging from being able to put realistic sizes on a steel plate connection, to the finer points of shaping out a casting. Because we are design-builders, design refinement and value engineering takes place throughout the design process, and our designs must meet not just structural or aesthetic requirements, but also fabrication and erection constraints.


Responsibilities & Metrics:


  • performance is measured on the profitability of your department, together with schedule and quality control;
  • develop budget and programme for each project. Manage performance to these metrics and report weekly to PM office / GM;
  • manage workload and oversee three to five project draftsmen;
  • manage coordination of each project’s design with both external design team (Architect, Engineer) and internal PM / engineering team. Attend and minute weekly design meetings;
  • responsible for checking drawings prior to issue outside the DO;
  • develop drafting and document control standards for the department. Be fully aware of drafting / modeling software options and manage choice of software on each project;
  • perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling of project work as required;
  • manage the production and quality of these drawing sets throughout each project;
  • responsible to the project team for accurate and timely execution of drawings;
  • work closely with the production manager to achieve high quality useable shop drawings;plan and ‘storyboard’ at the start of each project to determine structural, layout, shop, and erection drawings;
  • work with business development personnel to create models, renders, and other graphics used in proposals and presentations;
  • develop standard approach for creating visuals and renders for potential projects;
  • from your experience, always be on the watch for “Murphy”, meaning, anticipate where things could go wrong and plan for prevention;
  • from your experience, provide guidance and mentorship to other staff members when suitable and specifically be responsible for the coaching and development of the drawing office staff;
  • develop familiarity with past companies projects and create catalogue of good details / drawings for reference;



  • reports directly to the General Manager, however, there will be considerable interface and accountability directly to the President on design related issues;
  • responsibility for the satisfactory execution of all duties in a thorough, accurate and prompt manner;
  • a commitment to integrity, honesty and forthrightness in all dealings, both externally and internally;
  • a commitment to seeking out cost-efficient methods in order to maximize profits for the company;
  • a commitment to cooperate and collaborate with our engineering staff;responsibility for the continual improvement of systems and standard procedures;
  • is knowledgeable in all aspects of structure including wood, concrete and steel buildings and can offer input to the engineering staff;




  • As our work is technical, a university degree in a related field is preferred (Civil Engineering, etc), though a combination of post-secondary education and industry experience may substitute;
  • Minimum of 10 years in either structural engineering or steel detailing;
  • Team-focused and an able teacher;
  • Strong leadership qualities marked with a sense of urgency and a compunction to “make it happen”;
  • A penchant for detail;
  • A skilled communicator in the English language, both written and verbal;
  • Advanced Skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook);

This is a fulltime position

Salary of $80,000 to $100,000 per year

plus benefits, depending on experience.
