VIU’s department of Disability Services is searching for a qualified Educational Advisor, Disability Services Mental Health Access Specialist to join their team. This permanent, full-time position will ideally start as soon as possible.
Disability Services at VIU is a busy, growing department that each year provides academic accommodations and other services to over 600 students with a wide range of disabilities. The department currently invigilates over 1,000 accommodated exams per year. Flexibility and creativity are key to ensuring student needs are appropriately met.
Reporting to the Director of Student Affairs, the Mental Health Access Specialists’ overall focus is to work directly with students with disabilities to ensure appropriate accommodation for their emotional, physical, financial and health needs in order to enhance the quality of their learning experience. This role is responsible for providing expertise and case management of complex student mental health/psychiatric issues, crisis management, and for developing initiatives (groups, workshops) designed to support and maximize the educational experience of students with mental health disabilities. Provide expert advice and consultation for faculty, develop and provide educational opportunities to faculty and staff regarding mental health disabilities and their impact on students’ academic performance.
