We're looking for a Director of Software Development to change the global retail landscape by providing customers with shipping alternatives that are so fast and convenient that customers choose Amazon for all their shopping needs. This position will align the strategic direction of various delivery programs in each country, evaluate new alternative delivery mechanisms and the associated user experiences, invent new ways to better serve millions of customers including Prime members, and drive alignment with multiple stakeholders both in technology and product development.
This position will lead a talented group of software development managers, engineers, and technical program managers who are responsible for delivering large cross-team initiatives and new-to-market product ideas that improve delivery experience in a financially viable manner. The team drives complex business problems, leveraging both company-wide platform solutions as well as designing them from the ground up where they don't exist.
This role will work directly with key internal teams (Inventory Platform, Fulfillment Centers, Consumer Product Categories, Transportation, Search, and Retail Website) that serve as providers of different capabilities, to help evolve and drive the overall vision for the different delivery programs. You will partner with product management in initiating, prioritizing, owning, and delivering technical projects to meet key business objectives globally across free shipping, premium delivery, Add-on, and several other delivery programs.
The key strategic objectives for this role include:
•Help create and benchmark great new user experiences related to shipping and delivery
•Optimize eligibility of products in each delivery program to drive incremental cost savings
•Build scalable and flexible platform solutions to be able to experiment with and launch new delivery programs and experiences with agility.
•Grow and develop a great team of software development leaders
During the first 12 months, the Director of Software Development will:
•Hire and develop senior software development leaders to develop bench strength in the team
•Partner with product management to deliver on two new delivery programs globally that uniquely change delivery experience on Amazon.
•Influence key stakeholders and drive consensus on several platform improvements and new premium delivery programs.
•Establish her/himself as a key member of the Amazon global consumer organization, supporting, challenging, and inspiring peers and teams.
The ideal candidate will be a sharp, seasoned senior leader with a demonstrated history leading organizations that create great customer experiences. The candidate will have a track record of delivering large-scale, consumer facing products, built on simple and elegant software architecture. S/he will have managed by leading multi-team organizations but will have maintained the ability to dive deep on customer experience, architecture, technical detail and organizational capabilities.
Through setting direction for large-scale, customer facing businesses, this leader will have managed senior software development leaders and influenced executives across the organization through strong persuasion skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate proactive product and technical leadership, strong verbal and written communication skills, and a proven ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
While the role is a leader of leaders, the successful candidate will not just be a great manager, but a thought leader who inspires his teams by example to invent on behalf of Amazon's customers. Like other leadership roles within the Amazon Consumer business group, this is a global role, powering great user experiences wherever Amazon operates and working in partnership with local Amazon leaders.

•Technically credible to lead a team of world class software engineers and development managers and be able to deliver the right product with a scalable engineering design.

•Able to balance technical leadership with sound business judgment.
•A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience.
