The Director, Corporate Supply Chain Management is a critical leadership role within Seaspan Shared Services, focused on the procurement and management of Seaspan's supply chain for Marine Transportation and Shipyard repair businesses. The incumbent will manage a team of approximately 50+ employees, including functional professionals and direct labour staff.

The position is responsible for the following functions in support of five operating companies:
  • Governance
  • Systems & Processes
  • Supplier approval and selection
  • Sourcing, Negotiation, and Contracting
  • Procurement
  • Warehouse and Stores Management

This position oversees the management of a regional supply base, ensures best-in-class vendors, competitive cost, along with identification of alternate supply sources for business continuity. The Director, Corporate Supply Chain Management will drive initiatives and continuous improvement projects targeted at achieving or exceeding desired operational metrics. The position ensures company-wide policies and procedures provide sufficient governance, risk mitigation, are cost effective and fully supportive of operational demands while ensuring a high standard of integrity and internal controls.

The successful candidate will be an effective communicator, exceptional team player and will manage activities within this group targeted to deliver high impact results.
Duties/Accountabilities
  • Lead and implement large-scale procurement change initiatives in a complex structure.
  • Develop, design and implement supply chain business models to support changing organizational requirements.
  • Support the operational requirements of Seaspan's Shipyards and Marine Transportation operations.
  • Lead, manage and report on the Corporate Supply Chain roadmap of initiatives, ensuring priority, status and resourcing requirements are met and communicated effectively.
  • Manage activities of staff including goal setting, performance evaluations, development plans, succession planning, compensation and time management.
  • Ensure the team's skill sets meet current and future demands by providing regular feedback and coaching.
  • Provide direct leadership for the management of supply partners. This includes contract and price negotiations, alignment of technology and roadmaps as well as capability and capacity alignment with business strategies.
  • Develop and present annual budgets and monthly forecasts for Corporate Supply Chain departments, including periodic reporting of key variances.
  • Responsible for achieving department KPI metrics.
  • Owns and manages the Procure-To-Pay Policy. Monitors policy compliance through regular review of KPI's and Management Reports and implementing corrective actions in support of the procurement and inventory policies as needed.
  • This position will oversee the JD Edwards ERP system as it relates to inventory and purchasing modules, and continue to develop the processes and tools required.
  • This position will Identify and develop key strategic supplier relationships, negotiate key supplier arrangements, and, if necessary, rationalize supplier base to an optimal level through tendering and selection of preferred suppliers.
  • Monitors contract compliance and implements corrective actions to ensure compliance throughout Seaspan ULC.
  • Analyse inventory levels identifying key items and rationalizing inventory items. Determine optimal inventory levels and establish economic order quantities to meet business needs.
  • Upon request, assist management with annual and 5-year budgeting process by providing indicative pricing for future operating costs.
  • Participate as necessary, on behalf of Seaspan ULC, in industry associations (eg: BCBC - Industry Council for Aboriginal Business).
  • Act as a role model for Seaspan's cultural values.
Education and Experience
  • 10+ years experience in procurement, finance or business field.
  • 10+ years senior leadership experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering or related discipline.
  • Advanced degree, MBA, P.Log., CPP (Canada) or CPM (US) certification desirable.
  • 5-7 years experience drafting contracts and other legal documents and negotiating large, complex contracts.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Exceptional negotiation skills and proven ability to draft strategic agreements.
  • Exceptional leadership and highly effective communication skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices in supply chain management, procurement, material management, inventory control, distribution and logistics.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO standards, as applicable to supply chain management, procurement, material management, inventory control, distribution, and logistics.
  • In-depth understanding of ERP system (JD Edwards or similar).
  • Experience with Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or other process improvement methods.
  • Knowledge of the transportation industry (marine and/or shipbuilding preferred).
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office - Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skilled in developing creative strategies for bids, contracts, vendor/customer relationships.
