About the Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to join our team in Haisla, BC on a full-time basis. 

Reporting directly to the Chief and Council, the CAO has the overall responsibility for the day to day operations of Haisla Nation, and ensuring that the council's priorities move forward. In this role, you will also help foster an organizational culture that values diverse experiences and perspectives, build alignment across the team, and integrate the Nation’s strategies.

Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating various complex services and programs across different departments
  • Preparing and managing multi-million dollar operational budgets, and ensuring adherence to these budgets
  • Providing sound advice and direction to Chief and Council in order to achieve the directives of the Nation
  • Motivating team members to ensure that high-quality services are consistently delivered
  • Monitoring and guiding staff performance to achieve goals that align with the Council and Nation's vision
  • Identifying risks and finding solutions through organizational planning, creative partnerships, and communication
  • Serving as liaison to multiple levels of government and a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Balancing the needs and objectives of the Nation’s ongoing plans while also addressing emerging and urgent issues
  • Working closely with all departments to leverage existing opportunities and to maximize new opportunities and programs as they emerge
  • Managing a continuing organizational development program to ensure effective communication between departments
  • Writing council reports and updates, and making recommendations
More About You 

In order to qualify for this role, you will possess a University Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, First Nations Management, or another relevant field, as well as a minimum 5 years of experience in a senior management position, including extensive experience managing large budgets.

As our ideal candidate, you will also join us with:

  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Ability to clear a Criminal Records Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Strong financial acumen with proven experience in balancing multi-million budgets
  • Well-rounded business experience which includes Human Resources and conflict resolution
  • Sound knowledge of municipal finance, infrastructure, and community development
  • Familiarity with Financial Administration Law (FAL)
  • Visionary nature which ensures the Nation’s values are reflected in processes, leadership, and culture
  • Ability to build and mentor highly effective teams
  • Experience working in an Indigenous government office (preferred), or with other elected government officers
  • Proficiency in MS Office and modern communication tools

You have an understanding of, and respect for Indigenous culture, customs, traditions, and issues. Your excellent communication and relationship building qualities, coupled with your commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, allow you to create and nurture relationships with people at all levels, inside and outside the organization. 

In this high-profile position, you will have strategic and long-range planning skills, coupled with experience in organizational development and governance, as well as public affairs. Sound decision-making skills and the ability to motivate your staff will also be crucial to your success in the role.
