Reporting to the Youth Wellness leader, and as a member of the Indigenous Youth Wellness team, the Community Initiatives & Social Media Coordinator is responsible for communication activities and initiatives of the Youth Wellness Team with particular focus on podcasts. The coordinator manages the podcast website(s), IYW social media channels, and general program promotion, develops and implements a strategy and coordinated action plan for the IYW Team's presence at community events, and provides assistance with issues management and media relations and general communications initiatives. The coordinator cultivates opportunities for partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations. As a member of the Youth Wellness Team, the coordinator will contribute to, and play a key role in executing, the Indigenous Health Department's goal of creating meaningful, culturally-relevant, wellness-focused health promotion programming.

What you'll do
  • Manages the IYW websites and social media channels, including being responsible for development of strategies to ensure their effectiveness as communication vehicles used in the engagement of key stakeholders and in the achievement of PHSA Indigenous Health objectives.
  • Maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders (sharing, promoting events, initiatives etc.). Leverage relationships and opportunities with key online individuals, influencers and organizations
  • Represents the voice and the image of IYW on social media. Actively monitors and responds to social media mentions, creates and maintains positive relationships with our online community and, identifies exchanges that need to be elevated to the issues to the IYW Lead. As a member of the IYW team, participates in the development of an event and community engagement strategy aimed at increasing engagement and participation in IYW programming. Represents the IYW Team at a variety of community events when appropriate.
  • Develops content and presents information at education events, health fairs, formal and informal meetings for the purpose of educating and informing the public on the mission of the IYW Team. Coordinates speaking engagements for IYW Team member and program Elders, ensuring compliance with PHSA Indigenous Health presentation criteria and requirements.
  • Provides issues management support and communications advice to staff, as assigned by the Lead, Communications (drafting issues notes/ briefing notes, key messages and other relevant information).
  • Researches, writes and assists in the management of proactive media releases/pitches under the direction of the Lead and PHSA. Provides media support, including serving as a media escort and obtaining patient/staff consent for media interviews if required.
  • Writes, edits and coordinates production of a variety of communication materials (brochures, news updates, fact sheets, news releases - for print and online use), including liaising with designers, printers and other suppliers. Uses desktop publishing to produce internal publications, including layout, editing and production. Ensures overall quality, consistency and effectiveness of communications materials.
  • Collaborates with PHSA corporate and agency-based communications staff, supporting website and social media engagement projects and initiatives with communication support and planning.

What you bring
  • A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a baccalaureate degree in communications, marketing, or a related discipline and at least five years of recent, related experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts, including the determinants of health in relation to legislation and public policy. This understanding is supported by significant knowledge of Canadian and Indigenous theoretical orientations and ideologies.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada is required. Lived experience with Indigenous populations and demonstrated extensive knowledge of culture, protocols, traditions, and ideology of Indigenous people and organizations is an asset.
  • Knowledge of media production methods. Ability to work with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Ability to deal with multiple tasks and deliver required results on deadline.
  • Experience using social media and other digital technologies to support organizational communications and community engagement.
  • Solid writing and oral communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to proof-read documents. Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing software - Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends when required.

Job Type: Regular Full-Time
Salary Range: $59,344 - $74,181+/year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan.
