The Building Department is looking for a Building Technologist to work in an auxiliary capacity. This is specialized work entailing responsibility for the provision of effective plan checking service to review new construction projects and alterations/additions to existing buildings/structures for compliance with the design and life safety standards of the municipality prior to issuing building permits. The successful candidate will manage the review of complex projects; coordinate the processing of applications through various City Departments; provide assistance to departmental staff in interpreting the BC Building Code, regulations and by-laws; clarify problem areas with the plans; participate in the development of departmental and inspection staff in matters related to interpretation of the BC Building Code and perform other related work as required.
Qualifications include graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology, and considerable related experience in a municipal, building, architectural, or engineering field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the BC Building Code is required, as well as considerable knowledge of building construction materials, National Fire Code of Canada and the Provincial Fire Services Act. The successful candidate will possess the ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of staff, owners, builders, professionals and the general public as well as the ability to read and understand plans, drawings and specifications and to suggest corrections and actions when required, and participate in the review of policies and by-laws. BOABC Level 3 Certificate and Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia are required.This posting will remain open until the position has been filled.
