Job Summary

The Ministry of Water, Land, & Resource Stewardship Fisheries Management Section develops programs and initiatives which protect, restore and enhance the Province's fisheries resources. The responsibility of the Fisheries program is to manage fish, and fisheries for the people of British Columbia. The main strategies of the program are to conserve wild fish stocks, protect and manage fish habitat, serve the public interest and practice strong corporate management.

As the lead BC biologist for international recovery work with Kootenay white sturgeon and burbot, you play a key role leading the delivery of technical biological services in applicable areas of fish and recreational fisheries, to meet the long-range fisheries management plans of the Region and Ministry.

Skills important to this position include experience in applied fish resource management and stock assessment methodology, knowledge of fish biology, fish stock assessment and fish habitat relationships. As the BC representative with the international co-managers you are responsible for attending international co-manager meetings, delivery of field and reporting requirements as agreed upon in annual recovery team meetings, managing large contracts, supervising technicians and contractors, and leading and coordinating field projects with several government agencies, First Nations, and other stakeholders. You will utilize your effective communications skills in this role, responding to requests from the public, media and funding partners for information regarding sturgeon and burbot recovery initiatives in the region, giving technical presentations to fish and game clubs, service organizations, peer groups and other government agencies.

Job Requirements:

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in biological sciences or related field and a minimum of 4 years of related experience*, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience* may be considered.
  • Registered (or immediately eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.

Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Biologist (RP Bio) with the College of Applied Biology within 6 months of appointment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be confirmed. If you are not currently registered, advise how you have confirmed with the CAB that you are immediately eligible.

*Related experience includes:
  • Experience in field-based biological sampling, analysis and reporting.
  • Experience in applied fish resource management, fisheries stock assessment, and fish habitat assessment.
  • Experience assessing and monitoring natural resources.

Preference may be given to applicants with any of the following:
  • Experience leading staff in project or field settings.
  • Experience working with white sturgeon and burbot.
  • Experience working on large lakes and rivers including operating large boats.
  • Experience working in a multi-agency co-manager group for the restoration of fish species.
  • Experience providing advice within a regulatory regime.
  • Experience planning, coordinating, and implementing stock assessment and resource use/evaluation projects.
  • Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.

Willingness Statements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 driver's licence.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Must be physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
  • Willingness to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments. This may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in camp conditions and operation of a variety of equipment.
  • Willingness to meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
