Job Summary

The Population and Public Health Division (PPH) is responsible for improving population health and well-being and advancing health equity through health promotion and prevention, health protection, communicable disease prevention and control, and strategy, planning, and evaluation.

The Communicable Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC) Branch provides strategic leadership; expert advice; best practice guidance; development and oversight of legislation, regulation, and policy; communication and coordination with health system partners; public reporting, monitoring, analysis and course correction for all aspects of communicable disease prevention and control, including vaccine preventable diseases and immunization services; communicable diseases, including novel pathogens, high-threat pathogens, and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs); infection prevention and control in health care settings; antimicrobial stewardship; and pandemic preparedness.

The Director of Infection Prevention and Control provides expertise in a politically sensitive Ministry where programs and policies have significant impacts for the Province and are under constant public scrutiny. This senior position leads change by managing complex projects and innovative strategies with health system partners across the continuum of care as part of an integrated approach to provincial infection and control. The position leads the development of strategic plans, legislation, regulations, policies, guidance documents, educational resources, and knowledge translation tools to build health system capacity and infrastructure for infection prevention and control. Stewardship of the health care system is a key role of this position. This includes providing effective direction, meaningful support, targeted monitoring, rigorous evaluation, and strategic intervention when necessary.

Job Requirements:
  • Degree in public health, infection control, public or business administration, nursing, health administration, or a related field and two (2) or more years of related experience*; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training may be considered.

*Related experience must include the following:
  • Experience at a management level leading and supervising work in the health sector, including planning, coordinating resources and team members.
  • Leading initiatives related to the prevention and control of communicable disease.
  • Leading complex projects and processes in a multi-disciplinary environment involving large health service organizations.
  • Working productively and cooperatively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leading initiatives related to population and public health, health equity, or the determinants of health.
  • Promoting evidence-based solutions to health issues linked with controversy and highly charged public debate.
  • Managing contracts.

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
  • Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations status or non-status, Inuit and/or Métis), with the required combination of education and experience.
  • Graduate degree in public health, infection control, public or business administration, nursing, health administration, or a related field.
  • Experience leading public health policy development.
