Vancouver or Victoria BC

The Ministry of Attorney General works in partnership with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General to advance a shared vision of a safe, secure, just, and resilient British Columbia. The ministry works to keep communities safe and provide certainty, proportionality and, above all, fairness when dealing with criminal, civil and family law matters and to protect people, especially those who are most vulnerable.

The ministry's Legal Services Branch (LSB) serves as the government's provider of legal and legislative services. LSB provides advice in many areas, including constitutional and administrative law; Crown-Indigenous relations, resource, environment and land law; revenue and taxation law; health and social services law; finance, commercial and transportation law; and justice, employment and education law. In addition to legal advice, some practice groups within the branch provide litigation support. LSB is a leader in developing innovative ways to use technology and dispute resolution alternatives.

Solicitors within LSB advise the Minister of Attorney General, Cabinet, ministries, and certain public agencies on legal matters to ensure that all areas of the Provincial government act in accordance with the law and minimize any legal risks associated with government operations. Branch barristers represent the government in court in civil matters and before administrative tribunals. Legislative Counsel drafts the Province's enactments.

The ideal candidate must possess a record of excellence as a lawyer; exemplary legal skills and a broad knowledge of the law, including Crown-Indigenous relations and Aboriginal law; a clear understanding of the role of the Minister of Attorney General and ministry operations; and an understanding of the importance and value of independent legal advice.

Experienced developing public policy and legislation, this candidate is committed to innovation and public service, as well as to being a diplomatic and strategic problem-solver in all situations. A trusted and experienced leader, the ideal candidate is an exemplary communicator with advanced interpersonal skills, who has a keen interest in developing both people and relationships, and has demonstrated commitment to developing a diverse, inclusive and culturally safe work environment.

A complete role description and listing of qualifications is attached. The appointee will be required to consent to a criminal record check.

The BC Public Service is committed to creating a diverse workplace to reflect the population we serve and to better meet the needs of our citizens. Consider joining our executive team and being part of an innovative, inclusive, and rewarding organization.
