Job Summary

The Public Guardian and Trustee ("PGT") of British Columbia is a corporation sole, created under the Public Guardian and Trustee Act which operates independently under provincial legislation to protect the legal and financial interests of children under the age of 19 years; protect the legal, financial, and health and personal care interests of adults who require assistance in personal decision making; and administer the estates of deceased and missing persons. As a result of obligations created by statute, the Public Guardian and Trustee exercises quasi-judicial authority in specified situations. In addition, the Public Guardian and Trustee is called upon to provide independent comments to the Court when the legal or financial interests of minors, adults under mental disability or estates are at risk. The Public Guardian and Trustee is independent of government in its case-related decision making responsibilities.

The Public Guardian and Trustee strives to promote family involvement in securing appropriate protection for individuals or their estates. The Public Guardian and Trustee must observe prudent business practices, is bound by fiduciary principles and is ultimately accountable to the Court. The Services of the Public Guardian and Trustee extend to clients resident throughout the province and, less frequently, in other provinces and countries throughout the world.

The Services to Adults Division delivers a wide range of individualized services to or on behalf of vulnerable adults who require assistance in managing, protecting, and making decisions about their personal, financial or legal affairs. Vulnerable adults may require assistance by reason of mental illness, developmental disability, traumatic brain injury or degenerative conditions affecting brain functions(e.g.: dementia).

The Regional Consultant provides protective financial, legal and health care services to vulnerable adults within the community .

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a social science discipline or related field (e.g., social work, psychology, sociology, gerontology).
  • Minimum of three years of progressive and recent related experience working in a setting oriented towards providing services to people with disabilities, a mental illness, developmental disability, traumatic brain injury or degenerative conditions affecting brain functions (e.g., dementia).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid B.C. driver's licence.
  • Preference may given to candidates with a master's degree in a related field.

Provisos:
  • May be required to use own vehicle on an expense account basis.
  • Required to work some evenings/weekends and statutory holidays and to travel with little notice.
  • Exposure to regular travel (often alone) in remote locations, hospitals and care facility setting that have a high propensity for contagions.
  • Exposure to a high stress work environment working with complex, ambiguous and emotionally charged situations.
