The Public Guardian and Trustee ("PGT") of British Columbia is a corporation sole, created under the Public Guardian and Trustee Act which operates independently under provincial legislation to protect the legal and financial interests of children under the age of 19 years; protect the legal, financial, and health and personal care interests of adults who require assistance in personal decision making; and administer the estates of deceased and missing persons. As a result of obligations created by statute, the Public Guardian and Trustee exercises quasi-judicial authority in specified situations. In addition, the Public Guardian and Trustee is called upon to provide independent comments to the Court when the legal or financial interests of minors, adults under mental disability or estates are at risk.

In this position you will provide protective financial, legal and health care services to vulnerable adults within the community.

The Personal Care Decisions team is seeking regional consultants to work out of the PGT's Vancouver office.

Part 3 of the Health Care (Consent) and Care Facility (Admission) Act will be coming into force on November 4, 2019. This new important legislation protects the rights of British Columbians by ensuring that adults provide informed consent when moving into a care facility. In situations where an adult is mentally incapable of providing consent themselves, the law allows a substitute decision maker to consent on their behalf The Public Guardian and Trustee of BC is named as a potential substitute decision maker and will be involved in this very impactful decision.

In this role, the Regional Consultant will be responsible for making care facility admission decisions and/or authorizing others to act as substitute decision makers. In addition, the role requires an extensive amount of consultation with external stakeholders, research, and investigation in situations that are often urgent and involve complex abuse/neglect dynamics.
We are seeking a candidate with exceptional communication, analytical, and research skills with the ability to think critically and influence others. Candidates who are curious, insightful, organized, and motivated are highly desired. The Regional Consultant has solid working knowledge of legislation and community resources relating to vulnerable adults from diverse backgrounds and has the ability to take initiative and exercise sound judgement in problem solving and decisions making. This is a great opportunity for an experienced decision maker who enjoys the challenge of a high-profile, high-volume work environment.

-On call standby coverage on weekends and statutory holidays throughout the province for health care decisions.
-Exposure to a high stress work environment working with complex, ambiguous and emotionally charged situations.
-Attend hospital and care home settings that may have a high propensity for contagions.
