The Special Authority (SA) unit adjudicates patient-specific requests for limited coverage drug benefits as well as exceptional requests for non-benefit drugs. This unit receives and processes 1,700 to 1,900 Special Authority requests per day submitted by prescribers on behalf of their patients. The requests are handled by Special Authority staff comprised of clerks, technicians, and pharmacists. The unit also utilizes advisory committees comprised of contracted practicing physician specialists to advise on more medically complex requests.

Team lead will supervise, lead, and organize the operational delivery of a team of Administrators/Adjudicators responsible for assessing clients' status in relation to Pharmacare regulations, policies, and guidelines, and provides technical guidance to staff adjudicating independently on consistent and medically complex drug requests.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Must have grade 12 graduation supplemented by courses in a related field.
  • Must have a Medical Terminology Certificate or higher.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience in the adjudication of Special Authority requests.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience in providing client service in an adversarial environment.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations and/or policies.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience supervising and leading others.
