You\u2019ve likely heard the buzzword of \u201c<em>lifelong learning\u201d<\/em>. It\u2019s all about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/best-practices-to-develop-soft-skills\/\">developing your skills<\/a> throughout life to meet the changes within your industry. Just think of how much computers have changed every industry. Did you ever think you would conduct most of your work via video conferencing?<\/p>\n<p>Jobs are changing to meet the needs of society. The World Economic Forum\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Future_of_Jobs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0that 65% of children starting at school will have jobs that don\u2019t yet exist. Jobs like \u2018<em>social media specialist\u2019\u00a0<\/em>only came into existence in recent years. Some of these careers don\u2019t fit into a specialist degree, meaning employers look at the applicant\u2019s skill set instead.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Post-COVID_changes_to_the_hiring_process\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Post-COVID_changes_to_the_hiring_process\"><\/span><strong>Post-COVID changes to the hiring process<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No one expects to live through a pandemic. No one expects to run a business during a pandemic. It\u2019s no surprise that the pandemic has given us all a new perspective, including on the hiring process. Employers are using this time as an opportunity to change their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/7-tips-to-establish-an-effective-recruitment-process\/\">recruitment process<\/a> and even the way their business operates.<\/p>\n<p>The World Economic Forum estimates that one-third of all jobs will be transformed by technology. Formerly office-based jobs will transition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/how-to-stay-happy-working-from-home\/\">working from home<\/a>, enabling the possibility of remote working.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infosys.com\/reskillrestart-america.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Infosys<\/a>\u00a0used the pandemic as an opportunity to bring together a consortium of partners to host a free platform that provides apprenticeship opportunities and job training. It connects job seekers to potential employers who are searching for candidates with the right skill set.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_companies_already_prioritizing_skills\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_companies_already_prioritizing_skills\"><\/span><strong>The companies already prioritizing skills<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While skills are the future of recruitment, there are already thousands of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/blog\/no-degree-required\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">businesses<\/a>\u00a0that are thinking this way. Some of the biggest companies, like EY, and Google, are prioritizing skills over degrees. These companies are also incorporating lifelong and continuous learning into their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/employee-engagement-happiness-and-tips-to-improve-both\/\">employee development programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It%E2%80%99s_also_about_%E2%80%98soft%E2%80%99_skills\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It%E2%80%99s_also_about_%E2%80%98soft%E2%80%99_skills\"><\/span><strong>It\u2019s also about \u2018soft\u2019 skills<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You might think that skills are things like operating equipment or understanding how certain software works. When we talk about skills, we\u2019re also talking about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/best-practices-to-develop-soft-skills\/\"><em>soft\u00a0<\/em>skills<\/a>. Companies are looking for candidates who have the soft skills that set themselves apart from the competition. Soft skills like attention to detail, team working, creative problem-solving, and independent work are highly desirable in every industry.<\/p>\n<p>These are skills you can\u2019t learn in a lecture theatre but have to develop over time.
