{"id":2720,"date":"2011-08-18T08:37:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-18T08:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/hr-advice\/finding-the-right-person-for-your-job\/"},"modified":"2024-12-08T22:19:49","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T06:19:49","slug":"finding-the-right-person-for-your-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/finding-the-right-person-for-your-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding the Right Person for Your Job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4330\" style=\"vertical-align: baseline;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Finding_the_Right_Person_for_Your_Job-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Finding_the_Right_Person_for_Your_Job\" width=\"240\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Finding_the_Right_Person_for_Your_Job-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Finding_the_Right_Person_for_Your_Job-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Finding_the_Right_Person_for_Your_Job.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Finding the right person for your job isn\u2019t easy.\u00a0 If it were we\u2019d all be happy and businesses would be humming along contentedly without any conflict whatsoever because we\u2019d all be living in the fantasy world as illustrated in the satirical movie, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Stepford_Wives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThe Stepford Wives\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, we need to be honest here and figure out what you can realistically do to ensure you find the right person.<\/p>\n<p>What I am going to suggest may sound to some of you like it\u2019s too much work \u2013 but my years of experience have taught me that doing the work up front will save you ten-fold as you begin to move forward and people are indeed doing what it is you hired them to do.<\/p>\n<div class=\"content_ad_right\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Things you need to think about:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/hiring-employees-seven-winning-strategies\/\">Define the job<\/a> that you really need to fill?<\/li>\n<li>What are the primary duties and what is the order of importance of those duties?<\/li>\n<li>What skills does this person need to have and to what level?\u00a0 (For example, if you need someone to do accounts receivable and payable \u2013 will the candidate be able to use Excel \u2013 or do they need to have experience with a particular software package to do the work efficiently?)<\/li>\n<li>Who will this person report to?<\/li>\n<li>What is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/the-importance-of-corporate-culture-and-fit-to-employee-success\/\">culture of your company<\/a> (if new, think about your vision and who would fit that)<\/li>\n<li>How will you pre-screen the potential candidates?<\/li>\n<li>If there are specific skills required, are you prepared to test for those skills and are the tests you\u2019re going to use validated and legally defensible?<\/li>\n<li>Do have standardized interview questions that will adequately provide what you need to know?<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019ve decided who you want to offer a position to, have you constructed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcjobs.ca\/blog\/what-you-need-to-know-about-creating-a-letter-of-offer\/\">offer letter<\/a>?\u00a0 And if so, have you covered what you need to cover to clearly define the relationship?<\/li>\n<li>Do you know how you will bring this person into the organization, in terms of who will provide him or her with the orientation and on-boarding?<\/li>\n<li>Do you know how you will evaluate this person and how often?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I said, it may seem like a lot of work; but like anything else in life, if you prepare a solid foundation, you can feel more comfortable about the stability of the structure.<\/p>\n<p>The most successful businesses are those that have repeatable processes and systems in place.\u00a0 I encourage you to think about your systems and processes with people management.
