2020 has been a difficult year for job search as markets around the world crumbled due to the COVID-19 crisis. As industries begin to regain their footing in Canada, trends are emerging that point to the jobs of the future. Here are the job markets that will see the highest demand in Canada in 2020.

List of High-Demand Jobs in Canada 2020

Jobs in Labour

According to the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum’s National Labour Market Information Report,  around 67,000 new job openings for journeypersons in the trades will be required to sustain the workforce through 2023, with BC, Alberta, and Ontario driving this growth of this job market [1].

1. Welders

Though the work can be dangerous, welders are essential to the construction industry. In fact, welders continued to operate throughout the pandemic. The job doesn’t require a post-secondary education, and pays at least $28.50 per hour. Due to their importance relatively high wage, welders are considered one of Canada’s most in-demand jobs.

2. Drivers

As some of the only exceptions to pandemic-related border closures in Canada and the US, long haul drivers continue to be an essential role in the economy, ranking #2 on Randstad Canada’s list of most in-demand jobs for 2020. With the proper driver’s license, employment in this field should be easy to come by, earning between $36,650 to $48,600 annually.

3. Heavy Duty Mechanics

One of the more highly skilled jobs in this industry, heavy duty mechanics work to repair and maintain large machinery. With a hand in nearly every major industry from construction and transportation to forestry and mining, this job made Canada’s top 15 in-demand careers according to the National Occupation Classification. Work in this career is lucrative, paying $25-$42 per hour in urban centres and upwards of $50/hour in more rural locations.

Jobs in Healthcare

With society new fixation on health and hygiene, it’s no surprise that jobs in healthcare ranked highly on surveys of in-demand jobs in Canada. Add in an ageing Canadian population and it is clear why jobs in this field are a safe bet for job searchers.

1. Registered Nurse

In case you missed the daily 7:00pm cheers throughout the early days of lockdown, nurses are one of the most hardworking and dedicated people in the healthcare industry. With an average salary of $76,362 and a predicted 139,700 job openings by 2024, nurses are at the top of the list when it comes to jobs we need to fill.

2. Occupational Therapist

Expected labour shortages in this field mean a positive outlook for occupational therapist. These healthcare professionals can work in places like hospitals, in physical rehabilitation clinics, or in social assistance. From 2019 to 2028, 11,800 of these new jobs are expected to become available.

Jobs in Business

The COVID pandemic affected many businesses, but jobs in the field haven’t disappeared entirely. In the uphill battle to regain economic stability, jobs in business-related fields are at the forefront.

1. Accountant

Accountants monitor and keep track of a company’s financial operations by preparing financial statements and calculating taxes owed. As governments implement new laws for the financial sector, accountants will be essential in helping businesses comply with these new regulations. With a difficult individual tax season ahead due to the CERB program, Canadian accountants will find plenty of work come tax season. The average salary currently sits at $57,000 per year.

2. Business Development Manager

As businesses rebound from the impact of the pandemic, these jobs will take on the crucial role of determining a business’ priorities, planning and executing strategies for success. This job supports the growth and profitability of a company by developing and maintaining business relationships for an average yearly salary of $85,000.

As businesses begin to re-open under new public health regulations, the job market will change in dramatic ways. While certain jobs may have vanished permanently, new opportunities have also emerged for the post-quarantine job search.

Job Market Changes in the ‘New Normal’ Workplace

1. Health and Safety Jobs in Higher Demand

Health and hygiene has been the focal point of the economy re-opening. Therefore, it’s no surprise that many of the new job opportunities are related to safety and COVID-19. Some of these jobs you never would have encountered in a job search a few months ago. For example, contact tracers for new coronavirus patients and greeters who screen construction workers before entering the site. There are many new positions being created amid the new focus on health and safety [1].

Manufacturing of Personal Protective Equipment like masks, goggles and face shields is another rapidly growing area. With 3,000 companies across Canada now producing medical equipment in response to shortages and 81% of businesses expecting to require PPE for their staff as they re-open, more jobs are available in this growing sector.

2. Jobs to Help Everyone Stay Home

Schools and supermarkets are unable to hold the same number of occupants due to new regulations. As a result, new job markets are emerging to make it easier for everyone to stay inside. Take out delivery drivers are one example of a job that has gone through an unprecedented hiring boom.

Personal shoppers are no longer the realm of luxury retail, as shopping apps allow users to buy groceries online and send a personal shopper to collect the items, with some shoppers making up to $200 a day. One such company, Instacart, has reported a 150% jump in order volume this year, leading to the hiring of 300,000 new shoppers across North America since March. Warehouse workers for e-commerce giants are also in more demand as consumers begin to rely increasingly on online shopping.

3. Jobs to Promote a Shift Towards Online Education

Many of the services that were in demand before the pandemic are now finding new ways to reach clients. The enormous shift towards online education as schools and universities cope with social distancing has increased demand for tutors across a multitude of online learning platforms specializing in subjects from Art and Music to STEM and ESL. With such an array of options, job searchers with different skills can leverage their individual talents into a teaching gig.

4. Jobs to Create Public Spaces for Social Distancing

As we begin to reimagine the public spaces of a post-coronavirus world, the job market for those who can design innovative solutions to the social distance problem has seen growing demand and a 10% hiring increase in recent months. No doubt jobs like occupancy planners, industrial designers, and interior architects will be vital to the way society moves forward.

5. Job Market Recovery Not Certain Across the Board

Although the job market has started to rebound in many sectors, not all jobs are making a comeback. With social distancing in place, traditional service industries are expecting far fewer customers. Fewer workers will certainly be required in movie theatres, restaurants, airplanes, and arenas if these spaces aren’t filled to the brim with customers.

Whether employees work from home or in-office, there is more to ideal workers than just completing tasks as-instructed.

Job Market Trends Every Work From Home Employee Should Know About

Today, the job market favors personnel who are confident, reliable, and highly-effective communicators [1]. Demand for these soft skills — sometimes called “core skills” by job search experts — now outranks every other hiring requirement. This makes core skills a critical component of job search, application, hiring, and ongoing performative successes, especially for entry-level and remote jobs.

Consequently, the best strategies for work from home success focus on creating a remote-first or remote-friendly work environment, routine, and protocols. In doing so, people holding remote jobs can both leverage and further develop the core skills that make them most valuable to an employer.

Secrets For Being A Better At-Home Worker

Successful work from home activity requires and builds employee reliability, confidence, and communication skills. These core skills are apparent at every juncture in any remote job — including while creating an ideal work environment, setting and sticking to healthy work from home routines, and building and maintaining the most beneficial communication and connection structure for both performance and morale. Specifically, work from home employees who wish to continuously improve in their remote job performance know:

1. A Good Foundation For Work From Home Success

The first step for anyone aiming to improve their remote job performance is straightforward: ensure that the work from home environment meets the basic functional needs of the job.
This includes having access to necessary technology, stable and secure internet connectivity, privacy, and the ability to mitigate on-the-job distractions.

2. The Best Work From Home Routine Has Boundaries

Much of the best advice for success in remote jobs involves boundary-setting. That is because creating expectations for other people present in the household as well as coworkers and supervisors — which includes working set hours, keeping a meeting/appointment schedule, taking scheduled breaks — makes work from home employees more confident and reliable.

3. Disconnection Is The Biggest Threat To Work From Home Success

A sense of disconnection from the firm is the driving force behind disengagement from objectives, loss of confidence in both the self and the organization, and the decision to start the job search for alternate positions. This makes collaboration, candid/consistent communication, and face- and air-time during meetings critical. In the absence of these elements, work from home employees run the risk of becoming siloed, which damages well-being and can diminish engagement with and personal commitment to both everyday tasks and ongoing projects.

Tips For Monitoring Work From Home Success

The fact of the matter is: people who work from home are, on average, 47% more productive than in-office staff. Additionally, research shows that personnel assigned to (well-designed
and well-supported) remote jobs take shorter breaks during the workday, request less time off, and need fewer sick days than in-person job holders.

Work from home success is indicated by more than just quantitative performance metrics. Research shows that working in a (well-designed and well-supported) remote job dramatically lowers employee turnover. This suggests that the most successful work from home personnel should also report feeling:

  1. Confident in their ability to perform all job functions in a work from home context;
  2. Consistently secure in their work-life balance; and
  3. Engaged with, valuable to, and cared about/supported by the firm as well as their colleagues and supervisors.

Work from home employees who do not consistently feel confident, secure, and supported in the remote jobs — regardless of other measurable performative successes — will struggle to sustain high-level performance and will be unable to foster growth in relevant core skills. Nevertheless, this trajectory can be reversed by modifying the work from home environment, boundaries, and communicative structures. (https://www.dunkinbahamas.com)

As out-of-sorts as 2020 has been so far, we know many are eagerly looking forward to when the job market and employment go back to normal. Though we’re not sure the world will ever be the same post-CoVID, in anticipation of some normality, we’ve put together top job trends for this year. The job trends for this year vary over different sectors, from skilled workers to white-collar positions. These trends may have looked very different if CoVID-19 hadn’t exploded across the globe. Job trends that are usually consistently on the rise such as hospitality, construction and retail were the first to feel the blow of CoVID. Most job loss was in positions that could not adjust to remote work. Taking into account the changing workforce, we’ve gathered job trends that are likely to be consistent through the years, or experience a boom in hiring as soon as CoVID precautions allow.

Health Care Workers

Coming as no surprise, healthcare workers are in some of the most valued positions today. Healthcare work can be very flexible, offering casual, part-time and full-time. You can work as a care aide, a nurse, doctor, dentist, or health support worker. The field is vast and can fit many different needs. Another benefit to working in healthcare is ease of relocation. Many countries are eager to have extra healthcare hands, particularly after the last four months. Having valued skills will make visa applications smooth sailing. Look at the list of top healthcare positions in Canada to see if you’re interested in a career change.

Sales Associate

Shockingly, sales associates are some of the hottest jobs on the market. As the face or voice of a product or service, sales associate positions can also be in the remote sector as sales personnel. This
might appeal to some of you looking for remote work during isolation or because you’re looking for a new job. The flexibility for remote positions keeps sales associates as a job trend on the rise.
Check out Indeed for some remote sales positions, or start prepping your resume for heading back into the physical workforce!

Long-Haul Driver

Drivers rarely get enough credit, but a lot of our lives would fall apart if drivers didn’t exist. Canada is experiencing a shortage of truck drivers, as drivers retire. According to Canadian Visa, immigration to Canada may be easier if you’re coming as a driver.

Manufacturing/Machinists

As manufacturing has seen a significant decline since CoVID-19, there will be a rising need in manufacturing and machinists to assist with starting up regular operations. As the demand for retail in all sectors increases, manufacturing will follow suit.

Business Development Manager

This white collar position is currently in demand according to Randstand. If you’ve got experience in sales and a passion for creating and maintaining relationships, growth plans and team management, then this may be a new position worth considering. The significant thing about business development managers is flexibility and the combination of creativity and implementation – few jobs offer both possibilities.

Even CoVID-19 won’t be able to hinder the need for business development managers, and may create a higher need. As businesses reorganize and consider new approaches to working in a post-CoVID world, the need for fresh ideas and the ability to follow through will be an incredible asset.

We hope some of these job trends help you in your plans for the future, preparing for a strange new world, full of opportunities.

Career fairs are events designed to introduce students or potential employees to opportunities within their field of interest. Employers, businesses and organizations set up booths and informational sessions to showcase what they do and the talent they’re looking for.

There are multiple styles of career fairs. Some have an emphasis on specific fields or careers, and others are a general fair. They can be a marvellous way to connect with employers or future business partners but manage your expectations. Most participants will not walk away with a job offer but should walk away with valuable insight, and important contacts that could develop into something more if you play your cards right.

Preparation

Though enormous rooms packed with bodies and booths may give off an atmosphere of a comic-con or food fair, this is a professional event and should be treated as one. First impressions at a career fair can make or break a contact or job offer. Make sure you are wearing business-professional clothing and have resumes or business cards to hand out. Bring a briefcase or professional handbag to accept pamphlets, business cards or other promotional material.

Make sure you have monitored the event beforehand and taken notes of who you want to connect with, and which speakers you want to see.

Marketing

You will market yourself at a career fair, whether you are an attendee or a presenter. Your job is to connect with employers, employees or other businesses. Make sure you’ve done your research and formed an agenda. This will allow you to research the right companies or potential recruits so your questions can go deeper than what is available on a website or LinkedIn page. You need to be knowledgeable and have formed a pitch that introduces who you are, your skills and accomplishments, and what you have to offer. It needs to be engaging but informative.

Presentations

Most fairs will include seminars or keynote speakers that offer helpful advice, insider tips and encouragement to the job-hunter. Even if this is the only helpful thing you take away, it’s important to listen and pay attention. These speakers will be respected in the industry and will have helpful insight.

Take advantage of speakers in your field of interest, soak up as much information as you can about the ins and outs of your dream career – but don’t neglect the other speakers! Unexpected topics may surprise or inspire you to try something new. You may create partnerships that you wouldn’t normally consider.

Overall, these fairs can be a wonderful way to learn more about your future career, or foster connections that can further opportunities and relationships in the professional world.
