In the ever-changing job market, one undeniable trend has been the hiring of remote workers. Even before the CoVID-19 pandemic rocked the BC job market, remote work was on the rise. Remote work (or telework) skyrocketed during the pandemic. Prior to March 2020, BC only had a remote workforce of 7%. As of May 2020, BC jobs in remote positions increased to 30%.

The Benefits of Hiring Remote Workers

Since the world will never be the same, it’s best to take advantage of the new opportunity that remote work offers. The splendid news is that remote work is not only useful and productive but is also a great way for your company to increase its profit margin. Here are 5 benefits of hiring remote workers!

1. Productivity Increase

Though you may not think working outside of an office environment would be productive, studies have found that it increases productivity and output. According to a survey by CoSo, 77% of remote workers reported greater productivity. Although some remote work environments may seem filled with distractions, there are some great resources like the Pomodoro Technique to help with focus and productivity!

2. Increased Profit Margin

According to a paper published by Harvard, Americans will take an 8% pay cut to have a remote job. Although this is not a direct reflection of Vancouver jobs or the BC job market, we are not that different from our neighbours to the South. Also, paying attention to companies like Cisco that save $277 million in productivity due to remote work opportunities, will benefit you and your business.

3. Technology Advancement

It is very important in this day and age to hire employees who are tech-savvy. Hiring employees who are comfortable working remotely will help ensure that your team is up to date with the technology that our world is quickly relying on.

4. Environmental Impact

It may seem like an odd consideration, but going green is increasingly important when considering jobs in Vancouver and BC. According to Statistics Canada, remote work in the job market has taken 600,000 vehicles off of roads every year. With increasing awareness and concern for caring for our planet, hiring remote workers is a great way to show a little love for the earth.

5. Workplace Commitment

Indeed for Employers found that for a surprising 50% of workers, telework decreased their sick leave and increased a healthy lifestyle. Having employees with a balanced lifestyle will keep your employees happy and committed to their jobs.

Whether you’re a BC employer looking to hire for new positions, or are in the middle of a job search yourself, consider remote positions. Increased profit, a green planet, and a healthy work-life balance… what’s not to love?

As businesses begin to re-open under new public health regulations, the job market will change in dramatic ways. While certain jobs may have vanished permanently, new opportunities have also emerged for the post-quarantine job search.

Job Market Changes in the ‘New Normal’ Workplace

1. Health and Safety Jobs in Higher Demand

Health and hygiene has been the focal point of the economy re-opening. Therefore, it’s no surprise that many of the new job opportunities are related to safety and COVID-19. Some of these jobs you never would have encountered in a job search a few months ago. For example, contact tracers for new coronavirus patients and greeters who screen construction workers before entering the site. There are many new positions being created amid the new focus on health and safety [1].

Manufacturing of Personal Protective Equipment like masks, goggles and face shields is another rapidly growing area. With 3,000 companies across Canada now producing medical equipment in response to shortages and 81% of businesses expecting to require PPE for their staff as they re-open, more jobs are available in this growing sector.

2. Jobs to Help Everyone Stay Home

Schools and supermarkets are unable to hold the same number of occupants due to new regulations. As a result, new job markets are emerging to make it easier for everyone to stay inside. Take out delivery drivers are one example of a job that has gone through an unprecedented hiring boom.

Personal shoppers are no longer the realm of luxury retail, as shopping apps allow users to buy groceries online and send a personal shopper to collect the items, with some shoppers making up to $200 a day. One such company, Instacart, has reported a 150% jump in order volume this year, leading to the hiring of 300,000 new shoppers across North America since March. Warehouse workers for e-commerce giants are also in more demand as consumers begin to rely increasingly on online shopping.

3. Jobs to Promote a Shift Towards Online Education

Many of the services that were in demand before the pandemic are now finding new ways to reach clients. The enormous shift towards online education as schools and universities cope with social distancing has increased demand for tutors across a multitude of online learning platforms specializing in subjects from Art and Music to STEM and ESL. With such an array of options, job searchers with different skills can leverage their individual talents into a teaching gig.

4. Jobs to Create Public Spaces for Social Distancing

As we begin to reimagine the public spaces of a post-coronavirus world, the job market for those who can design innovative solutions to the social distance problem has seen growing demand and a 10% hiring increase in recent months. No doubt jobs like occupancy planners, industrial designers, and interior architects will be vital to the way society moves forward.

5. Job Market Recovery Not Certain Across the Board

Although the job market has started to rebound in many sectors, not all jobs are making a comeback. With social distancing in place, traditional service industries are expecting far fewer customers. Fewer workers will certainly be required in movie theatres, restaurants, airplanes, and arenas if these spaces aren’t filled to the brim with customers.
