]]>Health and hygiene has been the focal point of the economy re-opening. Therefore, it’s no surprise that many of the new job opportunities are related to safety and COVID-19. Some of these jobs you never would have encountered in a job search a few months ago. For example, contact tracers for new coronavirus patients and greeters who screen construction workers before entering the site. There are many new positions being created amid the new focus on health and safety [1].
Manufacturing of Personal Protective Equipment like masks, goggles and face shields is another rapidly growing area. With 3,000 companies across Canada now producing medical equipment in response to shortages and 81% of businesses expecting to require PPE for their staff as they re-open, more jobs are available in this growing sector.
Schools and supermarkets are unable to hold the same number of occupants due to new regulations. As a result, new job markets are emerging to make it easier for everyone to stay inside. Take out delivery drivers are one example of a job that has gone through an unprecedented hiring boom.
Personal shoppers are no longer the realm of luxury retail, as shopping apps allow users to buy groceries online and send a personal shopper to collect the items, with some shoppers making up to $200 a day. One such company, Instacart, has reported a 150% jump in order volume this year, leading to the hiring of 300,000 new shoppers across North America since March. Warehouse workers for e-commerce giants are also in more demand as consumers begin to rely increasingly on online shopping.
Many of the services that were in demand before the pandemic are now finding new ways to reach clients. The enormous shift towards online education as schools and universities cope with social distancing has increased demand for tutors across a multitude of online learning platforms specializing in subjects from Art and Music to STEM and ESL. With such an array of options, job searchers with different skills can leverage their individual talents into a teaching gig.
As we begin to reimagine the public spaces of a post-coronavirus world, the job market for those who can design innovative solutions to the social distance problem has seen growing demand and a 10% hiring increase in recent months. No doubt jobs like occupancy planners, industrial designers, and interior architects will be vital to the way society moves forward.
Although the job market has started to rebound in many sectors, not all jobs are making a comeback. With social distancing in place, traditional service industries are expecting far fewer customers. Fewer workers will certainly be required in movie theatres, restaurants, airplanes, and arenas if these spaces aren’t filled to the brim with customers.
