- Last month, BC labour market saw a loss of 7,000 jobs. The labour force, however, shrank by the same amount, so the number of unemployed remained unchanged at 100,000. As a result, the province's unemployment also remained unchanged at 4.2%.
- The number of people working in the construction industry hit another record last month, reaching 209,700 jobs. On the other hand, manufacturing employment was down by 13,000 jobs last month, with key losses in pulp and paper.
- Over the year (December over December), BC's job market grew by 72,900 jobs or 3.3%, second only to Alberta's growth rate of 4.3%. Significant job gains were seen in Retail and Wholesale Trade (+24,900), Construction (+23,200), and Transportation and Warehousing (+18,700). Only Manufacturing saw a significant loss in employment (-13,200).
- Employment in Accommodation and Food Services declined slightly over the year (-1,800), likely reflecting some weakness in the tourism sector as a result of the weak US dollar.
- At 4.2%, BC unemployment rate is a full percentage-point below last December's 5.2%. Except for the North Coast and Nechako, the unemployment rate has been treading downward in all regions in BC.
- The unemployment rate for women aged 25+ hit an all-time low of 3.3% last month.
Five-Year Outlook
According to the Conference Board of Canada, BC's labour market will remain fairly robust over the next five years.
While population growth will help steady at 1.1% per year, the province's labour force participation will level off at 66.0%. After that, expect to see the pace of retirements pick up and push the participation rate downward.
On the demand side, employment growth will gradually taper off to from 1.4% this year to 0.9% in 2012.
Given the directions in population, labour force growth, participation, and employment, the Conference Board is forecasting that the unemployment rate will remain at or very close to 4.0% for the next five years. This means that we can expect continued reports of shortages in occupations where wages are not sufficiently responsive to demand pressures.
