The Ministry of Attorney General, as represented by the Attorney General, is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia. It must ensure the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Attorney General in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. LSB assists all ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public bodies.

The Central Services Group (CS Group) is seeking a Legal Counsel 1, 2 or ,3 to provide legal services relating to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and other areas.

The successful applicant will work in the Information and Privacy Law practice area within the CS Group. Legal Counsel in this area provides advice to central government areas dealing with privacy, freedom of information and records management and responds to queries from other lawyers throughout LSB on similar matters. Legal Counsel also represent all government ministries and some other public bodies in matters before the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.

Job Requirements:
  • Must be a member in good standing or eligible for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia by September 30, 2024;
  • Legal Counsel Level 1: Up to five years of call;
  • Legal Counsel Level 2: From 6th to 11th year of call;
  • Legal Counsel Level 3: More than 12 years of call.

Preference may be given to candidates with:
  • Experience advising on Part 2 of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
